Panthera leo. The only big cat that lives in a group. A pride hunts as a unit and holds ground as a unit, which is why the lion is the animal almost every heraldic tradition reached for first.
The mane is not armour. It is a signal — the darker it runs, the stronger the animal advertising itself.
Panthera tigris. The largest cat alive, and the only one whose markings run through to the skin. No two tigers carry the same pattern; it identifies an individual the way a fingerprint does.
It hunts alone, after dark, and for an animal of its weight it moves close to silently.
Panthera pardus. Pound for pound the strongest climber of the big cats. It carries kills heavier than itself up into the branches and keeps them there, out of reach of everything else on the plain.
Its rosettes are hollow — ringed, open at the centre. That is the mark that separates a leopard from a jaguar at a glance.
Acinonyx jubatus. Built entirely around one thing. Semi-retractable claws for grip, an oversized heart and airway for the oxygen debt, and a long tail that steers the animal at speed.
It runs near sixty miles an hour and can hold it for about twenty seconds. Everything else about it is a compromise made to buy those twenty seconds.
Not a species. A panther is a black leopard or a black jaguar — the same animal carrying melanism, its rosettes still there and visible only in raked light.
Uncommon in the wild, and uncommon here. The fifth card is the one that closes the series.
Archived series are closed — their cards are no longer issued with orders. A set completed while its series was open remains valid.
