A BEZEL LEAVES NO MARGIN
A prong can be adjusted. It is a piece of wire bent over a girdle, and a setter who finds a seat slightly off can compensate as the metal folds. A bezel offers no such recovery. It is a continuous wall of metal that must match the outline of the stone before the stone ever goes in, and once it is closed, a gap anywhere along that line is visible from every angle.
The Ashley is bezel-set seventeen times over. Seventeen emerald-cut diamonds, 4.00 × 3.00 mm, 0.20 carats each, 3.40 carats in total — and an emerald cut is the least forgiving outline to bezel, because its corners are cut flat. A round only has to meet a circle. This has to meet eight straight edges and eight corners, on every stone.
THE SETTING
The wall is rubbed over each girdle by hand until it sits flush with the crown, giving a flat, continuous top line with no prongs standing above the surface. It is the most protective way to hold a step-cut stone, whose corners are its weakest points, and the reason the band can be worn without catching.
The result is 5.20 mm of alternating diamond and metal, closer to a bracelet link than a row of settings.
