WHAT A STEP CUT LOSES WHEN IT GETS SMALL
A large emerald cut works by depth. Its long parallel facets step down into the stone in ranks, and light bounces between them before returning — the effect the trade calls a hall of mirrors.
At 4.00 × 3.00 mm there is not enough depth for ranks. A step cut this size carries only two or three steps a side, so it behaves less like a corridor of mirrors and more like a single flat pane: calm, glassy, returning light in one broad flash rather than a sequence. It is a different character from the same cut at four times the weight, and putting sixty of them in a row is a decision to make that calm quality the whole point of the piece.
THE SETTING
Sixty emerald cuts, 0.20 carats each, 12.00 carats in total, every one in an individual collet cut to its rectangle with the corners taken off.
A run of sixty step cuts is the hardest alignment problem in this collection. A brilliant is round and forgives a degree of rotation because there is no edge to betray it. A step cut has four straight sides, and sixty of them in a line are sixty parallel edges the eye can follow from the clasp to the end. One stone seated a degree off is visible along the whole run.
