TWO WAYS TO REACH A CARAT WEIGHT
A line bracelet can arrive at its total in opposite ways. Elsewhere in this collection, thirty-seven stones at 0.30 carats make up 11.10 carats. The Charlotte uses one hundred and twenty stones at 0.05 carats to make up six.
The difference is not just budget. A few large diamonds give presence — each one is individually visible, and the eye stops on them. A great many small ones give continuity: more facets, more points of light, and a line that reads as a single bright band rather than a row of separate stones. One is a piece of jewellery you notice. The other is a piece you notice the light from.
THE SETTING
Every one of the hundred and twenty is set in its own collet — an individual collar cut to that stone. At 2.30 mm this is deliberately the slow way; pavé would have taken a fraction of the time and, from a metre away, would look similar. What individual collets buy is an open girdle on every stone, so light enters from the side rather than being shut in by shared metal.
The structure carries 16.25 grams of gold in 14K against 1.2 grams of diamond. On a bracelet, most of what you are holding is engineering: a hundred and twenty seats that must stay level while the whole line bends around a wrist.
