ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWO STONES, TWO DISCIPLINES
Most bands are set one way. The Christy is set two ways on the same surface, which is the reason it takes as long as it does.
Forty-two of its diamonds are collet-set — each given an individual collar cut to its own outline. The other eighty are held in a U-cut channel, where the metal beneath the row is scooped into a continuous curve. These are different trades with different tolerances, and on this ring they meet along the same edge. A collet is cut to a fixed point; a U-cut has to run true over a distance. Where the two systems adjoin, an error in either is visible in both.
WHAT IS ON THE BAND
Six square emerald cuts at 6.50 × 6.50 mm and 0.80 carats each carry the piece — 4.80 carats between them, and a square step cut is the most exposed shape in the trade, since its open table hides nothing at all. Twenty-four pear cuts at 4.00 × 2.50 mm run between them. Beneath and around, eighty round brilliants at 1.60 mm and twelve at 1.30 mm fill the field.
One hundred and twenty-two stones. 8.57 carats. Roughly eleven grams of gold in 14K.
