NOTHING TO HIDE BEHIND
A solitaire stud is the least forgiving thing a jeweller can make, because there is nothing else on it. No halo to lift the centre, no pavé to carry light when the stone will not, no pattern to occupy the eye. One diamond, four claws, and a post.
Every quality a stone has or lacks is on open display. A tint that would pass unnoticed beside twenty melee diamonds sits alone here. A cut a degree off, and the stone simply looks dull — there is nothing beside it to blame.
THE SETTING
Each 5.20 mm round brilliant, 0.61 carats, is held in four claws over an open basket. The claws are placed at the compass points rather than the diagonals so that more of the girdle is left uncovered, and the basket is cut away beneath so light can enter through the pavilion instead of stopping at a solid floor.
The whole pair carries 1.36 grams of gold in 14K. Almost all of what is there is diamond.
