A CHANNEL THAT CHANGES SECTION
Ninety-six of the diamonds on the Cynthia sit in U-cut channels — rows where the metal beneath the stones is hollowed into a continuous curve so light can pass through from underneath rather than stopping at a solid floor.
They are not all the same size. Fifty-two measure 1.20 mm and forty-four measure 1.10 mm, which means the channel cannot be cut to one section and run. It has to widen and deepen where the larger stones sit and close again where the smaller ones do, and the transition between the two has to be invisible. A channel that steps rather than tapers reads as a mistake in the metal, not as a change in the stones.
THE SETTING
The two centres are handled differently again: 6.50 mm round brilliants at 1.00 carat each, seated in individual collets. A collet is cut once to a fixed outline and either matches or does not, where the channel work is cumulative and has to stay true across its whole length.
Ninety-eight stones on a pair of studs, and 3.06 grams of gold in 14K holding all of it.
