At some point a row of diamonds stops being a row of diamonds. The stones get close enough and small enough that the eye gives up counting them and reads the surface instead — not stones on metal, but a band of light with a wrist inside it.
The Diane sits past that threshold. Two hundred and fifty-six round brilliants at 1.70 mm, 5.12 carats in total, more stones than any other piece in this collection.
THE SETTING
Every one of the two hundred and fifty-six has its own collet — an individual collar, cut to the stone. That is the slow way to do this by a wide margin. A pavé field would have set the same stones in a fraction of the time, and at a metre away the difference is hard to name.
It is visible closer, and it is visible in poor light, which is where cheap pavé fails. Shared metal closes the sides of every stone; an individual collar leaves them open, so light still reaches the diamonds when it is coming from one direction rather than all of them.
Beneath the stones sits 19.00 grams of gold in 14K — nearly a gram of structure for every thirteen diamonds, holding a surface that has to bend without a single seat shifting.
