AN OVAL HAS A BOW TIE IN IT
Every oval brilliant carries a dark band across its centre where the facets fail to return light — the trade calls it the bow tie, and no oval is entirely without one. What separates a good oval from a poor one is how faint it is, and that comes down to depth and facet angles the cutter chose before the stone was ever polished.
The Donna runs nineteen of them, 5.40 × 3.40 mm and 0.253 carats each, 4.81 carats around the full band. Set in a row, bow ties compound: if one stone is deeper than its neighbours its shadow sits darker, and the eye finds it immediately in a line of otherwise even stones. The nineteen have to be matched for depth, not only for outline.
THE SETTING
Each oval sits in its own collet, a collar cut to follow a continuous curve with no corner or point to register against. A round can be checked against a circle and a princess against a square; an oval has no such reference, so the collar is cut to the stone rather than to a shape, nineteen times over.
Because each seat is independent, the girdles stay open and the row is lit from the sides as well as the top — which is what keeps the bow ties faint in wear.
