FOUR HUNDRED AND THREE STONES, THIRTY-ONE PIECES OF JEWELLERY
Most bracelets are a row of diamonds. The Florynce is a row of finished objects.
Each of its thirty-one links is a complete haloed setting in its own right: an emerald-cut centre at 4.20 mm, ringed by twelve round brilliants at 1.20 mm, on a link measuring 5.90 mm across and 4.15 mm deep. Detach one and it would be a ring head. There are thirty-one of them, hinged together — four hundred and three diamonds in total, 10.42 carats.
WHY THIS IS DIFFICULT
A halo around a single stone is a familiar problem. A halo repeated thirty-one times, on links that have to hinge against each other and lie flat on a curved wrist, is a different one.
Every halo has to close evenly around a rectangular centre — twelve round stones negotiating four straight sides and four cut corners — and every one of the thirty-one has to match its neighbours, because they sit in sequence where any variation in the ring of small stones is directly comparable to the one beside it.
The step cut at the centre makes it harder again. A round centre would let the halo sit at a constant distance the whole way round; a rectangle does not, so the spacing of the twelve has to change as it travels and still read as even.
