A BAND WITH A DIRECTION
Most eternity rings have no orientation. A circle of round stones reads the same clockwise or anticlockwise, and there is no way to wear it wrong. A band of pears does not work like that. Every stone has a point and a shoulder, so the whole ring runs one way, and it looks different depending on which way round it sits on the hand.
The Gaby commits to that with twenty-four pear cuts at 4.00 × 2.50 mm, 2.22 carats in total, every one facing the same direction around the circumference. A single stone rotated against the flow is not a subtle flaw. It is the one the eye goes to.
THE SETTING
Each pear sits in its own collet. At this size the point of the stone measures a fraction of a millimetre, and it is both the most fragile part of the diamond and the part the collar has to close around most precisely. Too little metal and the tip is exposed to the first knock; too much and the collar creeps onto the table where it can be seen.
Twenty-four collars, each cut to follow a curve that tapers to that point, at a scale where the margin for error is smaller than the feature being protected.
