FIFTEEN STONES WILL NOT DIVIDE EVENLY
Alternating bands are easy to compose when the counts match. Six and six, or nine and nine, and the pattern simply repeats until it closes. The Jackie is built from nine emerald cuts and six round brilliants, and those numbers do not divide into each other. The sequence cannot be a single repeated unit — it has to be composed so that it still resolves when it meets its own beginning.
That is a design constraint before it is a setting one. Every ring has to close, and on a band with an uneven count the join is the moment the pattern either works or reveals itself as an accident.
THE SETTING
All fifteen stones are collet-set, each in a collar cut to its own outline. The emerald cuts, at 5.00 × 3.50 mm and 0.352 carats each, need a rectangle with cut corners. The round brilliants, at 3.50 mm, need a true circle. Because a step cut and a brilliant sit at different depths for a given spread, the seats are cut to different depths so that every table lands on the same plane.
The two cuts also behave differently in light — the emeralds return it in broad flat planes, the rounds break it into short flashes — so the band alternates between calm and bright as it turns.
