THE SAME FOOTPRINT, THREE DIFFERENT WEIGHTS
Every stone on the Joyce measures 5.00 × 3.50 mm. The emerald cuts weigh 0.352 carats, the ovals 0.236, the pears 0.221.
They occupy exactly the same rectangle of space on the finger, and one of them weighs more than half again as much as the lightest. The difference is entirely below the surface: a step cut carries a deep, blocky pavilion beneath its table, while a pear tapers to a shallow point and an oval sits somewhere between.
Designing to a fixed footprint rather than a fixed weight is the harder discipline, and it is the one that produces an even band — because the eye measures millimetres, not carats. A ring matched by weight would have had stones of three visibly different sizes.
THE SETTING
Eighteen stones, six of each shape, 4.85 carats in total, every one in its own collet cut to its outline. Three shapes means three collar geometries, and because the three cuts sit at three different depths for the same spread, the seats are cut to three different depths so that every table finishes on one plane.
Two grains of difference in any of those seats and one stone in eighteen sits proud of the rest.
