THE SHAPE THAT FITS A NARROW BAND
On a slim ring the limiting dimension is not the weight of the stone. It is the width.
A round brilliant of 0.052 carats measures about 2.4 mm across, and on a delicate band that overhangs — the stones sit proud of the metal and the ring loses its line. A marquise of the same weight measures 4.00 mm long but only 2.00 mm wide. It lies along the band instead of across it.
That is why the Lane is built from thirty-four of them. The cut was chosen for its proportions rather than its drama: it carries the carat weight lengthwise, where there is room, instead of sideways, where there is not.
THE SETTING
Thirty-four marquise at 4.00 × 2.00 mm, 1.77 carats in total, each in its own collet with the collar closing over both points.
Set nose to tail around the circumference, the points meet: sixty-eight tips, each one the thinnest part of its stone, each one arriving at the shoulder of its neighbour. The band reads as a single continuous chevron rather than as thirty-four separate stones — which only works if every one of them is aligned exactly on the centreline.
