Small diamonds are a commodity. Ask for a hundred at 1.40 mm and they arrive from a parcel, near enough identical because they were sieved that way.
Two pear cuts at 1.75 carats are a different proposition. At that weight each stone is bought individually, on its own certificate, and matching a second to it — same outline, same shoulder curve, same length-to-width, same colour, same clarity — means waiting for one to appear rather than requesting it. Earrings are the only jewellery where that matching is unavoidable, because the two stones are worn in view of each other.
The Layla carries 3.50 carats across the pair, in stones measuring 10.00 × 7.00 mm.
THE SETTING
Each pear is held in claws with a V-shaped prong closing over the point. A pear's tip is the thinnest part of the stone and the part that meets the world first; an ordinary round claw sitting beside it leaves it exposed, so the V wraps it from both faces at once.
Behind that, the gallery is left open. On a stone this size the pavilion is deep, and a closed back would trap the light that should be returning through it. It also keeps the weight down: 2.59 grams of gold in 14K carrying three and a half carats of diamond.
