A CUT INVENTED TO SOLVE AN ARGUMENT
For most of the twentieth century a buyer choosing a rectangular diamond had to accept a compromise. The emerald cut gave the shape — clean lines, cut corners, architectural calm — but its long step facets return light in broad flat sheets rather than fire. A brilliant gave the fire but only came round.
The radiant cut, worked out in the 1970s, put a brilliant's facet pattern inside a step cut's outline. Rectangle with the corners taken off; underneath, the triangular and kite-shaped facets of a round. It is the only common cut designed specifically to be a hybrid, and it exists because people wanted both things at once.
The Marion carries fifteen of them at 6.00 × 4.50 mm, 0.743 carats each — 11.15 carats of radiant cut around a single band.
THE SETTING
Each radiant sits in an individual collet cut to its outline. Between and beneath them run sixty-eight round brilliants at 1.70 mm, micro-prong set with the prongs raised from the metal itself.
Two techniques on one ring, with different tolerances. A collet is cut once to a fixed outline and either matches the stone or does not. Micro-prong work is cumulative, and has to stay level across a curve. Where the two meet, an error in either is visible in both.
