WHAT YOU GAIN BY TAKING METAL AWAY
The Maxwell uses exactly the same diamond as the Marisa elsewhere in this collection: a round brilliant at 2.50 mm, 0.065 carats. The two rings reach opposite conclusions about it.
The Marisa bezels its stones and fills the space between them with shaped gold, and fits eleven of them around the band. The Maxwell strips the metal back to micro prongs — the least material any setting uses — and fits sixteen.
Five more diamonds, half a carat more weight, and less gold: 2.42 grams against 2.86. That is the whole trade. Metal removed from between stones is circumference returned to the stones.
THE SETTING
At 2.50 mm the prongs holding these diamonds are not wire attached to the band. They are raised out of the band's own surface with a graver, cut by hand under magnification, then pushed over the stone.
Working that way is what allows the stones to sit so close together — there is no collar or bezel wall taking up room between neighbours, only a fraction of a millimetre of raised metal. It is also unforgiving: cut too deep and the metal that was going to hold the stone is gone, and it cannot be replaced.
