MORE STONES THAN THE BAND HAS ROOM FOR
A single row of 1.60 mm diamonds around a finger holds about thirty-four of them. The Michelle carries one hundred and eight.
They cannot sit in a line, so they are set in rows — and rows of round stones cannot simply be stacked. Placed directly above one another they leave diamond-shaped gaps of metal at every intersection and the band reads as stripes. The rows have to be offset so each stone nests into the hollow between two in the row beside it, the same packing a honeycomb uses, which is the only arrangement that closes the gaps and turns separate rows into one continuous field.
Every stone in that field then has to sit at the same height. On a curved surface, in three directions at once.
THE SETTING
All one hundred and eight are collet-set: an individual collar cut for each stone rather than a shared pavé bed. At 1.60 mm that is a deliberate refusal of the fast method, and the reason is light — shared metal closes the sides of every stone, while individual collars leave the girdles open so the field still reads bright in poor light rather than going grey.
1.94 carats in total, on 3.96 grams of gold in 14K.
