TWO POINTS, AT OPPOSITE ENDS
A pear has one point to protect. A marquise has two, and they sit as far apart as the stone allows — one at the top of the ear, one pointing down. Both are the thinnest part of the diamond, and on an earring the lower one is the end that meets a collar, a scarf and a hairbrush.
So the Nadia is held by a V-shaped claw at each tip, wrapping the point from both faces rather than pressing it from one side. Between them the stone is left almost entirely open.
WHY THIS SHAPE
A marquise is cut long for its weight. These measure 9.00 × 4.50 mm and weigh 0.594 carats each; a round brilliant of the same weight would span about 5.45 mm. On the ear the marquise covers nearly twice the length for the same money, which is the whole reason the cut exists — it was made to look larger than it is.
The trade-off is that a long, shallow outline shows its faults across a greater distance. Any asymmetry between the two halves of the stone, or between the two stones of the pair, is stretched out where it can be seen.
