SIX AROUND ONE, AND ONLY IF THEY ARE IDENTICAL
Six circles of equal size fit exactly around a seventh of the same size. Not approximately — exactly. It is a property of the geometry, and it is the reason the seven-stone cluster has been made for two centuries.
It is also why the Naomi has nowhere to hide. Make one of the outer six a fraction larger and the ring cannot close; make one smaller and a gap opens beside it. The arrangement only reads as a flower if all seven diamonds are the same diameter, which means fourteen stones across the pair that must be indistinguishable from one another.
All fourteen measure 1.90 mm.
THE SETTING
The prongs are shared: a single claw sits between each pair of neighbouring stones and holds both. That is what keeps the cluster tight — giving every stone its own four claws would push them apart and leave metal where diamond should be.
It also means each claw is doing two jobs at once, and cannot be adjusted toward one stone without pulling away from the other. The whole cluster is set as a single operation rather than seven.
