MORE DIAMOND THAN GOLD
The Paulina carries 2.09 carats of diamond on 1.14 grams of gold. Converted to the same units, that is 0.42 grams of stone against 1.14 of metal — more than a quarter of the ring's entire weight is diamond.
For jewellery that is an unusual proportion. Most rings are overwhelmingly metal with stones set into them; a fine pavé band can run thirty parts gold to one part diamond. This is closer to three to one.
Getting there means taking the metal down to the minimum that will still hold nineteen stones and survive being worn — which is the whole engineering problem of this ring. There is no shank to speak of, no gallery, no reinforcement. Nineteen collars, joined to each other, and very little else.
THE SETTING
Nineteen round brilliants at 3.00 mm, 0.11 carats each, every one in an individual collet.
Collet setting is what makes the proportion possible. A channel or a shared bed would have required a continuous wall of metal running the length of the band; individual collars need only enough gold to close around each stone and reach the next one. The gaps between them are structural nothing — and they are also where the light gets in.
