A HALO THAT HAS TO TAPER
Ring a round stone with small diamonds and every one of them sits the same distance from the centre. Ring a pear and none of them do.
A pear is wide at one end and comes to a point at the other, so a halo around it has to compress as it approaches the tip and open out again across the belly. The stones cannot be evenly spaced, because even spacing around an uneven outline reads as crowded at the narrow end and gappy at the wide one. They have to be graduated by eye so that the ring of light looks constant while the geometry underneath it is not.
The Sade repeats that thirty times — a pear centre at 4.80 mm ringed by twelve round brilliants at 1.20 mm, on a link 5.90 mm across and 4.30 mm deep. Three hundred and ninety diamonds in total, 7.65 carats.
THE STRUCTURE
Thirty complete haloed settings hinged into a seven-inch line. Each is effectively a finished piece of jewellery in its own right, and each has to match the twenty-nine beside it closely enough that the sequence reads as one object.
Every pear points the same way. A bracelet has a clasp, so it has a direction, and a single stone reversed in a row of thirty would be the only thing anyone noticed.
SPECIFICATIONS
Diamonds — 30 pear cut at 4.80 mm, 0.159 ct each (4.77 ct); 360 round brilliant at 1.20 mm, 0.008 ct each (2.88 ct). 390 stones, 7.65 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Haloed link, thirty hinged units.
Link — 5.90 mm across, 4.30 mm deep.
Length — fixed at 7 inches.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 20.23 g at 14K, 23.80 g at 18K.
