SET ACROSS THE BAND, NOT ALONG IT
The marquise cuts on the Sarah are 7.00 mm long. A size 7 finger has a circumference of about 54 mm, and there are sixteen stones on the ring.
Laid end to end they would need one hundred and twelve millimetres — twice the room available. So they are not laid end to end. Each stone is turned ninety degrees and set across the band, its length running from the knuckle side to the palm side, taking up only its 3.50 mm width of the circumference.
That single decision changes what the ring is. A band of lengthwise marquise is slim and directional, running around the finger. This one is wide — the full 7 mm reach of each stone becomes the width of the ring, and the points project out toward both edges rather than chasing each other around the circle.
THE SETTING
Sixteen marquise at 7.00 × 3.50 mm, 0.279 carats each, 4.46 carats in total, every one in an individual collet with the collar closing over both points.
Set crosswise, the points sit at the outer edges of the band — the most exposed position on a ring, and the thinnest part of each stone. There are thirty-two of them, sixteen along each side, and every one is covered by metal.
