THE SHAPES INTERLOCK
A heart is 4.00 mm across at its widest, and there are eighteen of them on the Sheri. Eighteen stones at 4.00 mm would need 72 mm of room; the circumference of a size 7 band is about 54.
They fit because a heart is not a rectangle. Its widest point is across the two lobes at the top and its narrowest is the tip at the bottom, so each stone can be set with its point tucked into the valley between the lobes of the next. The outlines overlap by about a millimetre each, and eighteen hearts occupy the space that would take only thirteen round stones of the same width.
The interlock is also what makes the row read as continuous. Set with gaps, hearts look like a charm bracelet. Nested, they read as a single scalloped band.
THE SETTING
Eighteen heart cuts, 0.27 carats each, 4.86 carats in total, every one in an individual collet.
A heart is the most complicated collar in this collection: around two convex lobes, into a concave cleft, and down to a point — and where the stones interlock, the collar of one has to clear the collar of its neighbour without either losing metal at the join. Eighteen times, around a curve.
