SHAPES THAT NEST
A marquise is widest at its middle and tapers to a point at both ends. A pear is widest near its base and tapers to a single point. Set them alternately and the wide part of one sits against the narrow part of the next.
That is not only a visual decision. It packs more diamond into the same seven inches than a row of any single shape could, because the gaps a tapering stone leaves beside it are exactly the spaces its neighbour's belly fills. The Valorie carries fifty-four stones and 9.03 carats on 13.90 grams of gold — a high ratio of stone to metal for a bracelet, and the interlock is the reason.
THE RHYTHM
Thirty-six marquise to eighteen pears: two to one, so each pear sits between a pair of marquise. The marquise measure 6.00 × 3.00 mm against the pears' 4.50 × 3.00 — a third longer at almost the same width.
Long, long, short. Long, long, short. The line does not read as evenly spaced because it is not; it has a beat, and the eye follows a beat further along a bracelet than it follows a uniform row.
THE SETTING
Every stone is individually collet-set, with the collar closing over each point — ninety points in total across the piece, all of them the thinnest and most vulnerable part of their stone, all of them on an object that spends the day against sleeves and tabletops.
SPECIFICATIONS
Diamonds — 36 marquise at 6.00 × 3.00 mm, 0.176 ct each (6.33 ct); 18 pear at 4.50 × 3.00 mm, 0.15 ct each (2.70 ct). 54 stones, 9.03 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Collet, one per stone.
Length — fixed at 7 inches.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 13.90 g at 14K, 16.35 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
