AS WIDE AS IT IS LONG
A heart cut is specified by its ratio of length to width, and the number decides whether it reads as a heart at all. Cut it longer than it is wide and it drifts toward a teardrop with a notch in it. Cut it wider and the lobes flatten out.
The Vanessa is 6.00 × 6.00 mm — exactly square in outline, the classic proportion. At a glance, from across a room, it is unmistakably the shape it is meant to be, which is the entire job of this cut. A heart nobody recognises has failed at the only thing it was asked to do.
THE SETTING
Three points of contact, all of them different. A V-shaped claw closes over the point at the bottom, wrapping it from both faces. At the top, a split claw sits in the cleft between the two lobes — the second weak spot on the stone, and the hardest to reach without the metal showing on the face. The outer edges of each lobe take a claw of their own.
Behind that sits a substantial gallery: 4.25 grams of gold in 14K, heavier than most studs in this collection, because a 0.75 carat heart is a broad stone and the structure under it has to be wide enough to carry it without flexing.
