A COLLET WIDER THAN ITS STRAP
A raised strap of gold runs down the center of the Alistair, and the band steps down off it to a matching lower tier along both edges. The diamond at the center, a round brilliant of 6.00 mm and 0.72 carats, is broader than the strap it sits on. So the collet cannot simply stand on the raised level: its wall carries on down past the step on both sides and meets the lower tiers too, held into the band at two heights.
The strap does not go all the way round. It runs down each side from the head and stops square at about the middle of the ring. Below that the band is one plain level, narrowing from 7.86 mm across the top to 4.05 mm underneath, where it is 1.77 mm thick. The depth and the width go where the stone is, not between the fingers.
THE SETTING
A full bezel: a smooth collar of gold closed over the whole girdle, with no claws. The top of the stone stands 4.59 mm above the finger, the highest point of the ring, and a collar leaves nothing there to catch.
The work is where that collar meets the band. On a flat face a bezel has one join, level all the way round. Here its wall crosses a step on each side, and every one of those corners has to be cut out and polished clean at both depths, directly beside the diamond.
