THE SAME TWO STEPS ON ALL FOUR SIDES
The ten diamonds of the Anthony lie in a rectangular pocket sunk into the top of a band 8.00 mm across, walled the same way on all four sides. Cross it from the plain gold and the face drops at a squared line, runs flat a narrow margin, drops again, and reaches the floor the stones sit on. Follow the row to its end and the same two steps are there, turned through a right angle: nothing is laid across the row to close it, and the wall goes round the corner.
The row stops before the pocket does. Past the last beads at either end a short run of bare floor carries on to the first step, so the rectangle is a shape drawn for the row, not a channel that ran out at it.
Outside the frame a groove and a rounded rail follow each edge and run out where it does, leaving the band plain but for a narrow step at either edge. It closes to 5.71 mm at the base and thins from 2.18 mm through the setting to 1.30 mm underneath. 7.43 grams of gold in 14K.
THE SETTING
Twenty-two round beads hold the ten stones, each 2.20 mm across: a pair on the two long walls between every two diamonds, and a pair against the outer edge of each end stone. Eighteen bear on two diamonds at once; the other four have one stone to answer for.
A bead closing over two girdles cannot be brought down on one without lifting off the other, so the row is seated as a piece and worked in order. The end pairs are raised from the wall a fraction before it turns the corner. Under each diamond the seat opens through to the inside, where the ten holes show as circles in a flat polished face.
