FIVE ONE WAY, TWENTY-EIGHT THE OTHER
The diamonds on the Conrad run in two directions. Twenty-eight follow the band, in two rows of seven down each shoulder. The other five cross it: a single file of round brilliants laid across the top from edge to edge, at right angles to every other stone on the ring.
That file sits in a slot cut down into the top of the band, between polished rails, and the two halves of the ring meet it at a clean step on either side, like a strap passing through its keeper. It also takes the smaller stone, 1.50 mm against 1.80 mm in the rows. Five of those occupy 7.50 mm of a top 8.73 mm wide; five of the larger would need 9.00 mm, more than the band has.
THE SETTING
All thirty-three are held by beads of gold raised from the surface, most of them shared between neighboring stones. The rows in the windows follow the curve of the ring, so each of the seven stones going down a shoulder lies at a slightly steeper angle than the one above. The file on the crossbar is straight, a pair of beads between each stone and the next, and a single stone set a shade high would break the line.
Each window is cut square into the polished gold and stops short of the crossbar, its rows closed by a short column of beads, so plain metal and the rails always stand between the two directions. Below the windows the band is polished gold to the base.
SPECIFICATIONS
Diamonds — 5 round brilliant, 1.50 mm, 0.012 ct each (0.06 ct); 28 round brilliant, 1.80 mm, 0.0218 ct each (0.61 ct). 33 stones, 0.67 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Shared beads: a single file of five across the crossbar, two rows of seven in each shoulder window.
Band — 8.73 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.35 mm at the base; 2.00 mm at the profile at the base. 19.81 mm inner diameter at size 10.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 6.29 g at 14K, 7.40 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
