THE RIB BREAKS FOR ONE DIAMOND
Across the top of the Gideon, two grooves divide the gold into a broad, flat-topped rib down the center and a narrower rounded rail at each edge. At one point the rib stops. A single round brilliant of 4.00 mm, 0.21 carats, fills the gap, its table only just above the gold either side, so it reads as a length of the rib rather than a stone set on top of it.
Its girdle runs out past the rib on both sides into the grooves, which leave the stone's flanks open to the light; only the outer rails run past it unbroken. The rest is plain polished weight: 7.98 grams in 14K on a band 6.73 mm across the top.
THE SETTING
There are no claws and no collar. The two cut ends of the rib are hollowed into concave arcs, one at each end of the stone, and those two curves alone hold it. Where the girdle meets the grooves there is no metal at all.
So the fit is the whole of the work. With gold on only two sides, both arcs must follow the girdle closely and be cut to the same depth, or the stone leans toward the tighter one and its table no longer lies level with the rib. There is little height to work in: 2.50 mm from the table to the inside of the band.

Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 7.98 g at 14K, 9.39 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
