LIGHTENED WHERE IT HOLDS NOTHING
A wide set band is usually lightened beneath its stones: an opening cut behind each seat, through to the inside, which takes weight out and lets light in. The Graham takes its weight from somewhere else. Across 7.08 mm a broad polished band stands proud down the center, and at each edge the gold steps down to a narrow ledge carrying one line of round brilliants 1.30 mm across, with a fine groove where the raised center meets each ledge. Both lines run the whole way round: 102 stones, 0.84 carats.
Inside, the surface is not a plain cylinder. A shallow channel is recessed round the middle of the inner face between two plain margins, crossed at intervals by short bars of gold. It runs behind the raised center, where there is nothing to hold, and the margins it leaves lie beneath the two rows, unopened. The weight comes out from between the rows rather than from under them: 10.27 grams in 14K.
THE SETTING
Each diamond is held by four beads, two at each side of its row, and owns none of them — every bead bears on the stone behind it and the stone in front. Both rows close on themselves, so there is no first stone to work from and no last one to finish against, and nowhere for a difference in spacing to go. A bead pressed a fraction hard moves two diamonds, and at 1.30 mm that shows along a line running the full circumference.
