TWO CIRCLES OF WIRE UNDER EVERY STONE
Each of the seventeen diamonds in the Harriet rests on two circles of round gold wire, one above the other, following the stone below its edge. Where one diamond meets the next, both pairs of circles meet at the prongs and are joined there, at two heights.
That is the reason for the second circle. Seventeen baskets joined at a single point each would behave like links in a chain and give a little at every junction. Joined at two heights, every junction is braced, which is how a ring of 1.24 grams at 14K can carry 3.22 carats of diamond and hold its shape. Between the two wires the side of each 3.70 mm stone is left open, so the edge of the ring shows diamond rather than a wall of gold.
THE SETTING
At every junction a single ball-tipped prong stands on each edge of the row and bears on both neighboring diamonds. Each stone is held at four points, all of them shared: thirty-four prongs for seventeen stones, where separate four-prong settings would need sixty-eight. From above, those round beads are almost the only gold in view.
With no solid floor beneath the stones, each one sits at the height of the notches cut into its four prongs, and every prong is notched twice, once for each diamond it holds. A notch cut a fraction low tilts the stones on either side of it, and in a row this regular a single tilted table catches the eye.
SPECIFICATIONS
Diamonds — 17 round brilliant, 3.70 mm, 0.1894 ct each. 3.22 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Shared prong, four to each stone, over an open basket of twin wire circles.
Band — 3.88 mm wide, 2.43 mm at the profile. 17.33 mm inner diameter at size 7.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 1.24 g at 14K, 1.46 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
