A SOLITAIRE'S HEAD ON A WIDE BAND
The Hector is 9.82 mm across the top of the finger, and it carries an engagement ring's head on that width. The center is a round brilliant of 0.72 carats, 6.20 mm across, held in four prongs on a collet of its own, rising through the halo around it rather than sitting down among the stones.
The head rises 5.22 mm off the band, and the width is what lets that height sit right. A tall head on a narrow shank tends to roll to one side of the finger; this one rests on a broad top, flanked by a raised plate of pavé on each shoulder. Below the plates the gold is plain and polished, tapering to 5.81 mm wide and 1.77 mm thick at the base. The cost is exposure: a stone this far proud meets a door frame first, so its prongs are worth having checked once a year.
THE SETTING
The halo's seventeen stones are 1.30 mm, a tenth of a millimeter smaller than those on the shoulders, set on a round plate almost as wide as the band and held by beads shared between neighbors. The center's collet rises through the middle of it.
Each shoulder plate is a raised rectangle stepped up from the band, set with three straight rows of ten, and it ends square partway down the shoulder. Below it the shank is solid gold, which is what leaves room to resize.

Certification — the 0.72 ct round center diamond ships with its certificate: GIA for natural, IGI for lab-grown. The seventy-seven side stones are melee and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Four-prong raised collet on a head standing 5.22 mm above the band; halo on shared beads; three-row pavé shoulder plates.
Band — 9.82 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.81 mm at the base, where it is 1.77 mm thick. 19.81 mm inner diameter at size 10.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 10.51 g at 14K, 12.36 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
