SHALLOWER THAN THE STONES ARE WIDE
The Imogen measures 1.12 mm at the profile — the whole depth of the band, from the finger outward. One of its diamonds is 1.50 mm across. The stones are wider than the band is deep, so there is no floor of gold to stand one on. Every seat is cut through, and each diamond is held at its girdle from the two edges of the band.
Across the top the band is 1.62 mm, 0.12 mm more than one stone, and thirty-eight stones run the full circumference at size 7. The ring carries 0.37 g of gold at 14K, narrow enough to wear beside another ring rather than instead of one.
THE SETTING
A pair of beads sits at every junction between one stone and the next, one on each edge of the band, and both are shared — the same two close over the diamond behind them and the diamond in front. Claws of their own would want gold between every pair of stones, and at this width there is none to give. The row finishes almost edge to edge, with very little metal visible from above.
Both edges are scalloped rather than straight, rising at each junction and dipping around each stone, and the same scallop repeats on the inner face, where every seat is left open. That is also what makes it unforgiving: a bead worked harder than the one opposite pulls two stones out of line rather than one, and no plain run of shank anywhere absorbs the error.
