STRAIGHT ACROSS THE FACE, CURVED ROUND THE SIDE
One line does all the work on the Isaac. It crosses the top of the band on a diagonal, and where it crosses, the gold is cut down into a shallow panel that carries the diamonds. At each rim the line turns: it leaves the face as a long curve, sweeps round the side of the band and narrows to a point against the edge.
Everything else is plain high-polish gold, with square rims and flat sides. The section barely changes — 6.00 mm wide, 2.17 mm through the stones, 2.20 mm at the base — so the back of the ring carries as much metal as the front, 6.37 grams of it in 14K. Three round brilliants of 2.50 mm lie along the panel, 0.18 carats in all, the first and the last set close to the rims.
THE SETTING
Each diamond drops into a round seat of its own, cut into the floor of the panel, and the gold closes on it at the girdle as a thin polished rim. Above that rim the metal stops: the crown stands clear of the panel, the full depth of its facets in the open.
All three seats are cut into gold 2.17 mm deep and have to finish at one depth. A seat a fraction low drops its stone below the line of its neighbors; a fraction high and the rim will not close on the girdle. There is no bead or claw to bring down afterwards on a stone that sits wrong.
