THE GOLD STOPS AT THE GIRDLES
The panel carrying the seven diamonds of the Leopold is cut down into the face of the band rather than stood on top of it, and its wall stops at the height of the girdles. Above that line there is no metal at all. The seven crowns are the highest points on the ring; the polished rails along both edges pass below them.
That is a decision about height, not width. The band is 7.10 mm across the top of the finger, tapering to 5.60 mm at the base; through the panel it is 2.69 mm from the inner surface to the top of the setting, and 2.33 mm under the finger. Seven diamonds of 1.39 carats sit inside those figures rather than above them, on 5.97 grams of gold in 14K.
THE SETTING
Sixteen round beads hold the seven diamonds, in eight pairs: one pair against each end of the panel, and one pair at each of the six joins between them. No gold crosses the panel from side to side. The beads sit only at the two edges of the panel, at the notch where one stone's circle pulls back from the next.
Every bead but the four at the ends does double duty, so the row has to be set as one piece. Each stone is carried at its girdle by beads that belong to the stone beside it as well. Set one a fraction low and the shared bead cannot be brought down to meet it without lifting off its neighbor.
SPECIFICATIONS
Diamonds — 4 round brilliant, 3.80 mm, 0.205 ct each (0.82 ct); 2 round brilliant, 3.60 mm, 0.175 ct each (0.35 ct); 1 round brilliant, 3.90 mm, 0.22 ct. 7 stones, 1.39 ct total.
Certification — every round diamond of 0.20 ct and above ships with its certificate: GIA for natural, IGI for lab-grown. The four 3.80 mm stones and the 3.90 mm stone qualify; the two 3.60 mm stones are melee and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Shared bead, sixteen beads in a rectangular panel cut into the top of the band.
Band — 7.10 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.60 mm at the base; 2.69 mm at the profile at the top, 2.33 mm at the base. 19.81 mm inner diameter at size 10.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 5.97 g at 14K, 7.02 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
