FOUR FLATS WHERE THE CORNERS WOULD BE
The face of the Randolph is a flat plate of gold 6.72 mm across, and seen from above its outline is not a rectangle. Every corner is cut back to a short flat, leaving an elongated octagon: two long edges round the finger, a short end at either shoulder, and four angled flats between them.
A corner is what goes first on a ring like this: it stands proud of two edges at once, so it is what meets a door frame or the edge of a desk. Cut back, it becomes a facet rather than a stub rounded off by wear.
The rest of the face follows that rule. Two stepped rails border the diamonds above and below, and each stops on the angle of the flat beneath it rather than running off the edge. Only the window ends square. Below it the band is plain and flat-sided, 5.42 mm wide and 1.50 mm thick at the base.
THE SETTING
Six round brilliants lie in one line inside the recessed window, held by beads of gold above and below. At the three joins in the middle of the row one bead serves two stones, closing over both girdles at once, which is what lets a row be set tight.
The end stones are not set tight. One at either end stands slightly clear of the middle four, and a single bead raised across that wider gap would bear properly on neither stone. Each of those two joins takes a pair instead, one bead leaning to each.

Diamonds — 4 round brilliant, 2.20 mm, 0.04 ct each (0.16 ct); 2 round brilliant, 2.10 mm, 0.035 ct each (0.07 ct). 6 stones, 0.23 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Shared bead, a single row of six in a recessed window, doubled at both ends of the row.
Band — 6.72 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.42 mm at the base. 2.32 mm at the profile over the setting, 1.50 mm at the base. 19.81 mm inner diameter at size 10.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 5.92 g at 14K, 6.96 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
