A SIGNET MARKED TWICE
The Roland has the proportions of a signet: a flat rectangular face, polished level and 6.70 mm across, where a signet would carry a crest. Instead it carries two short strokes of diamond, five stones to each, laid parallel on a slant like a pair of slash marks. The rest of the face is plain gold.
By weight the ring is almost all metal. Ten 1.30 mm diamonds come to 0.08 carats, against 8.57 grams of gold in 14K, most of it in a flat-sided shank 2.20 mm deep under the face. The face carries down over each shoulder as a raised panel, ending in a square step partway down the shank, so the signet reads from the side as well as above.
THE SETTING
Each stroke is a narrow rectangle cut into the plate, its rim bright-cut so the edge stays crisp against the polished face. The round brilliants run along it in single file, held by small beads of gold raised in pairs against each long rail of the recess, every pair shared between neighboring stones, and the ends of each bar closed the same way. There is no head; the diamonds sit in the face, not on it.
The plain gold is the less forgiving part. A flat polished face reflects as one unbroken plane, so a ripple left from cutting the recesses shows as a kink in that reflection. And the two bars have to agree in length, angle and spacing; nothing else on the face would disguise a difference.

Band — 6.70 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.43 mm at the base. 2.20 mm at the profile at the top, 1.50 mm at the base.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 8.57 g at 14K, 10.08 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
