THREE DIAMONDS AGAINST THE GRAIN
Everything on the top of the Rupert runs round the finger: three long grooves, the four polished ribs between them, the two flat edges. One line does not. A bar crosses the full 6.90 mm width on a slant, sunk below the tops of the ribs, and three round brilliants of 2.20 mm lie along it.
Cutting a bar across a face that is already grooved does not leave a clean edge. The three grooves stop dead where they meet the slanted wall, and each of the four ribs ends against it at its own point along the diagonal, so each side of the row closes as a staircase rather than a straight line: eight rib ends, four to a side, squared off on the angle.
Away from the bar the grooves run on and finish in squared ends partway down each side, and the band continues as plain polished gold — 5.49 mm wide under the finger, 1.50 mm thick the whole way round, 4.90 grams in 14K.
THE SETTING
Eight round bead prongs hold the three diamonds rather than twelve. Two stand at each end of the row, and between neighboring stones a single bead at either side of the gap bears on both.
The angle is what makes it exacting. The row has nothing square to sight against: it follows neither the edge of the band nor the grooves, only the stepped walls of its own bar. A seat cut a fraction off it shows at once against the straight polished ribs beside it.

Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Shared bead prong, eight in all, holding three stones in a line on a slanted bar sunk across the ribs.
Band — 6.90 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.49 mm at the base. 1.50 mm at the profile. 19.81 mm inner diameter at size 10.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 4.90 g at 14K, 5.76 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
