ONE BEAD, TWO SIZES OF STONE
Seventeen diamonds cross the top of the Tristan, and they are not one size but four, between 1.80 and 2.10 mm. Between every two stones stands a pair of beads, one at each rail, and each bead bears on both its neighbors. Where those two neighbors differ, a single bead has to meet two girdles at different distances and hold both tight.
The row itself is set on a slant. It starts near one edge of a flat, polished face 6.98 mm across and crosses at an angle to finish near the other, so the stones take a direction across the band rather than running straight down it. They are large enough to read singly, and the rest of the top is unbroken high-polish gold.
The strip ends square, on a last pair of beads. Below it the band is plain, 1.50 mm thick and 5.38 mm wide under the finger: 5.35 grams of 14K gold carrying 0.48 carats.
THE SETTING
Each stone sits in a recessed strip between two raised rails, held by the pair of beads ahead of it and the pair behind: four points to every diamond.
Those four are the only hold a stone has, and one left short shows as a diamond that turns in its seat. With four sizes in the row no two seats are cut quite alike, and every bead still has to finish at the same height as the rest.

Diamonds — 17 round brilliant, in four sizes: 4 at 2.10 mm, 0.035 ct each (0.14 ct); 6 at 2.00 mm, 0.03 ct each (0.18 ct); 3 at 1.90 mm, 0.0267 ct each (0.08 ct); 4 at 1.80 mm, 0.0225 ct each (0.09 ct). 0.48 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Shared bead, a single row in a recessed strip between two rails, crossing the top on the diagonal.
Band — 6.98 mm wide at the top, tapering to 5.38 mm at the base. 2.12 mm at the profile over the beads, 1.50 mm at the base.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 5.35 g at 14K, 6.29 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
