THE BEADS THAT HOLD NOTHING
Two sizes of gold bead run along the top of the Walter, and only the smaller ones do any work. Inside a sunken panel, small grains raised from the metal hold sixty-three round brilliants of 1.50 mm. Along each outer edge stands a row of larger polished beads, separated from the diamonds by a fine flat rail, holding nothing at all.
They are there to finish the edge. A flat band with square sides leaves a long straight line down either side of the set panel, and a row of round beads breaks that line without softening it. At each end the beads, the rail and the panel stop together on one square line, and the band carries on in plain gold.
It is 8.00 mm across at the top and at the base, 2.50 mm deep over the beads and 1.50 mm at the base, and it weighs 7.98 grams at 14K.
THE SETTING
Each of the sixty-three stones sits in three rows set square rather than staggered, held by grains of gold raised from the surface around it, inside a fine raised rim with square corners.
The two kinds of bead fail in different ways. The large ones are polished and regular, and run down a straight 8.00 mm edge where any difference in size or spacing shows against the rail beside them. The grains inside the panel are small and many, and every one of them has to finish at the same height or the field reads as uneven.

Diamonds — 63 round brilliant, 1.50 mm, 0.0125 ct each. 0.79 ct total.
Certification — these are melee diamonds and are not individually certified, which is standard practice at this size.
Setting — Bead, three rows in a sunken panel with a raised rim; a row of larger polished beads along each edge.
Band — 8.00 mm wide at the top and at the base; 2.50 mm at the profile at the top, over the beads, 1.50 mm at the base. 19.81 mm inner diameter at size 10.
Metal — 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. 7.98 g at 14K, 9.39 g at 18K.
Diamond origin — natural or lab-grown, to preference.
